They are hard-working, loving parents, but with mounting debts and their teenage son going off the rails, the pressures begin to tear the family apart.

The Trout Tour - The Vanbrugh with Michael McHale and Malachy Robinson

From: 31 Jan 2020
To: 31 Jan 2020
The Vanbrugh welcome regular guests Michael McHale (piano) and Malachy Robinson (double bass) for performances of two of the finest works in the chamber music repertoire. Brahms’ turbulent and dramatic Piano Quartet No. 3 in C minor tells the tale of Brahms’ love for Clara Schumann in one of the most powerful expressions of musical romanticism. The second part of the concert brings complete contrast with Schubert’s Trout Quintet, a perennial favourite amongst both musicians and audiences for its elegance, charm and beauty.

Hansel and Gretel - Irish National Opera

From: 18 Feb 2020
To: 18 Feb 2020
One of the greatest operas about children. Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel is full of music that is sweet and beguiling, and it combines childlike simplicity with heart aching beauty. He wanted a plot that ‘was not made up of murders, brutal deaths, operetta-like nonsense, or sugar-sweet fairy tales’. Do not be fooled. This is a story of greed and starvation, mouth-wateringly sugar-coated.
