A Man Called Ove is a touching portrait of a grumpy, widowed 59-year-old Swede with a heart of gold underneath his curt bad manners and frightful temper. Movies about grumpy old men learning to lighten up thanks to colourful neighbours are hardly novel and yet A Man Called Ove (based on Fredrik Backman’s 2012 novel) works its well-worn conceit to effective heartstring-tugging effect.
